Oh, those crazy chicken ...

"The Chickens Build a Wall" written and illustrated by Jean-Francios Dumont is a great book for introducing the subject of diversity to children. Actually, this is a great book for all ages because it could lead to discussions about the importance of community and considering "who is your neighbor?"

In this story, farm chickens have built a wall but no one else is quite sure of the reason. A hedgehog comes to the farm and this concerns the chickens because this hedgehog is strange and curls into a prickly ball. The chickens are very suspicious of this creature and things get out of control.  This story is a great lesson in making judgments about unknown people or ideas. It's a silly book with great pictures and can serve as a great lesson for all of us. Like the chickens, sometimes we get carried away, lose perspective, and lose sight of why we started something in the first place.
