Youth Mission Trip 2015

Broad Street Ministries mission trip, June 2015

In June I had the pleasure of going with four amazing young women from Sixth Church on a mission trip to Philadelphia. We participated in the Youth Initiative summer program hosted by Broad Street Ministries.  Broad Street is a worshiping community located in the heart of the Philadelphia city center. In addition to the Youth Initiative program they operate Breaking Bread - a ministry that feeds people in a unique way six times a week. They have other wonderful outreach ministries that you can read about here.

Anne, Emma, Glenna, and Hanna ready for the trip

During our week we volunteered along with youth and leaders from Church of the Covenant in Charlotte, N.C.  Below are some photos and links for the places where we volunteered during the week.

Books Through Bars

Books Through Bars is a non-profit organization that answers letters
from inmates and sends donated books. While volunteering we learned about the prison system
in the United States and discussed incarceration rates and what makes communities safer.

Manna

One of our days was spent cooking and packing means at Manna, an organization that provides
nourishing meals delivered to the homes of people with terminal illnesses.  Find out more about Manna here.

Philabundance

With our friends from Charlotte outside of Philabundance - which collects,
sorts, and processes food for food pantries in the tri-state area.  We spend the day sorting
donations from grocery stores and packing food. Learn more about the organization here.

Breaking Bread

We served meals for the Breaking Bread ministry at Broad Street. They provide meals
six times a week for anyone - including those experiencing homelessness and food instability.
Guests are greeted and seated by a host and served by volunteers eliminating the stress of standing in line.
