Reading Recommendation: Lent, Holy Week, Easter, and beyond!

Here are books we may be reading in Sunday school and Extended Session as we work our way through the end of Lent towards Easter.  I recommend all of these for reading at home!

Waiting by Kevin Henkes
We are always waiting for something! Lent and Advent are both times of waiting. This book can be great for any of the waiting times we experience in life!  For children, learning to wait can be extremely frustrating and hard. It's a part of our everyday life. We have to wait in line, wait for a birthday, and wait for our turns. In this book, an owl, a puppy, a bear, a rabbit, and a pig—all toys arranged on a child’s windowsill—wait for things to happen.  They are each waiting for different things. This book reminds us learning to be patient and waiting can be a time for hope and excitement as we look forward to what will happen next. (We own this one and it can be borrowed from the Sunday school shelves!)

Good News Bad News by Jeff Mack
This is a great book for younger children to begin to explore the story of what happens to Jesus throughout Holy Week and Easter.   The story of his trial and crucifixion is very, very sad - yet the Easter Ressurection is a time of great hope and rejoicing!  This story about a rabbit and a mouse who have very different personalities uses just four words to illustrate how good and bad can go together and even help each other. (This book is available at the library.)

Holy Week, Good Friday and the Crucifixion is the saddest and most difficult part of our Christian story.  These next two books are good reads for helping children explore the idea of death and grief- whether it be in the context of Jesus' life or the death of a loved one or a pet.  Try reading these if you need somewhere to start when talking with kids about this part of life.

Badger's Parting Gifts by Susan Varley

The is a great book about treasuring the memories of those who are no longer with us. Badger's friends are sad when he dies overwhelmed with sadness but soon come to remember and cherish all the wonderful memories. (This book is available at the library.)

Love is Forever by Casey Reslov

"My love for you will never stop. It lives on in your laughter, in your heart, and in your thoughts." This book gives parents and family members  a beautiful way to begin talking about loss and grief, and how to keep loved ones close to heart and mind through shared memories. Additional resources and information in the back are  from professionals who work with children and families experiencing grief and loss. (This book is available at the library.)
