Reflections for Youth - What's on your "To Do" list?
I remember in the summertime each week my mom would leave us a list of things that we needed to do before the week was over. Do you have chores you are required to do around the house? What is your most hated chore? Mine was always unloading the dishwasher.
So, there are a lot of reasons to have to do chores. Mostly, it's to pitch in and be a part of your household or community - to help take care of the places that we live.
But, also doing chores helps you learn how to do things so that you can take care of yourself when you are an adult. "Adulting" is sometimes not really that fun. Chores can be tedious - but necessary to keep order and function in the world.
I am thinking about chores this week because there is a story in the Gospel of Luke where Jesus is giving his followers some chores to do. Jesus is giving them chores to do for the same reason your family gives you chores—so they will know how to do things once they are out in the world without him
Now, the list of things Jesus gave to his followers was a little different from what you might have to do around your house—like unloading the dishwasher or putting their laundry away. Jesus sent his followers out in pairs to every town and every place where he himself intended to go. Their chores were to go out among the people and teach people about the Kingdom of God and share peace with all the people who welcomed them. He told them to take nothing with them and to eat whatever was given to them. He also told them that they were to heal the sick.
The scripture hints that they must have done these chores very well because they returned with Joy telling Jesus about those they had healed.
Chores can be time-consuming and sometimes very annoying - right? But the disciples were excited that they were able to do what Jesus asked them. They were excited because they were seeing that they could do what their teacher—Jesus did—even if Jesus wasn’t physically with them.
So, I am thinking this week that Jesus gave us pretty big and important chores to do—he asked us to love God and love our neighbor. And to share peace and healing love with the people around us.
I wonder how our days would be better if every day we wrote “Love God” and Love our neighbors” on the top of our list of chores?
What's on your "To do list" this week?
What are some things you can add to your list to help share peace and love with the people around you?
What is one "adulting" chore that you can learn to do for your family this summer?
