Reflections: Seeing God
Our Sunday school students area a lively bunch. The majority of them are in preschool through first grade. The majority of them are boys. They are fidgety, loud, they interrupt, and they have trouble sitting still. They are curious, creative, have boundless energy, and amaze me every single week with their insights, excitement, and ideas.
Each week, we begin Sunday School for the two younger classes with everyone sitting on the floor and taking turns sharing things we would like to pray about. We have a "Prayer Raccoon" - a plush puppet that we pass around and when it's your turn to hold it you share your prayer request.
As you can expect their are weekly prayers for toys, video games, birthday parties, and legos. But also, there are weekly prayers for mommies and daddies, grandparents, siblings and friends. After we share, one of the Sunday teachers leads the group in prayer.
Recently I said, "Okay everyone, fold your hands and sit still. Now close your eyes and think about God. Picture what you think God looks like in your mind."
"I can see him!" one child excitedly exclaims.
"Me too!" yells another.
That's church. And those are the moments in which the Holy Spirit is present and accounted for.
