January 2022<p><span face=""Amazon Ember", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; color: #0f1111; font-family: times; font-size: medium;">Hey there, It's been a while since I have recommended any books. Here are a few that I've found recently or rediscovered. I haven't found these in our local library yet but you can order them from your favorite local bookseller. (Or borrow them from me!) </span></p><p><span style="font-family: times;"><span face=""Amazon Ember", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; color: #0f1111; font-size: 14px;"></span></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnguQw8670inmfXHI_vHLd7zZr7Nv9-74HZJvHFGLbtFBqVkFjivmv2NFlL0bcZBTuLewGPmUmi8EVUKEsg2Q5ndLfssjYOA4NsrIxGliJAf9xORdtnYGPxwGxrPnRDpeX7kCDe6wfXqow/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: times;"><img alt="" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="411" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnguQw8670inmfXHI_vHLd7zZr7Nv9-74HZJvHFGLbtFBqVkFjivmv2NFlL0bcZBTuLewGPmUmi8EVUKEsg2Q5ndLfssjYOA4NsrIxGliJAf9xORdtnYGPxwGxrPnRDpeX7kCDe6wfXqow/" width="197" /></span></a></div><p></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="background-color: white;"><span face="Amazon Ember, Arial, sans-serif" style="color: #0f1111; font-family: times; font-size: medium;"><b><i>"I Wonder: Exploring God's Grand Story: an Illustrated Bible" by Glenys Nellist </i></b></span></span></p><p><span face=""Amazon Ember", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; color: #0f1111; font-family: times; font-size: medium;">Nellist has written a bunch of children's books but I think this is her first story Bible. I like the way a lot of women's stories are included and the inclusive language for God. The illustrations are vibrant and not cartoon-ish and the people are not white :) Each story is wrapped up with Godly Play-like "I Wonder" questions that encourage readers to ask their own questions. I like the straightforward and uncomplicated way the stories are told. It is written for ages 4 and up. I think this is accurate although some of the stories are on the longer side for younger readers. </span></p><span style="font-family: times;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #0f1111;" /></span><br /></span><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM7JToUiI67meuU48u_EjLOJsAFqYMcDbhrDE91ugelJEG_d1cTIFZJXCSfWzRYTBHPc_UynKUzUlm3T1ur32gAlH7pWH2TsSI7QpV1DzJqBL8AfzKuNNOZeNOzL56mchXXzKc2v2kUiI3/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: times;"><img alt="" data-original-height="499" data-original-width="375" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM7JToUiI67meuU48u_EjLOJsAFqYMcDbhrDE91ugelJEG_d1cTIFZJXCSfWzRYTBHPc_UynKUzUlm3T1ur32gAlH7pWH2TsSI7QpV1DzJqBL8AfzKuNNOZeNOzL56mchXXzKc2v2kUiI3/" width="180" /></span></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: times;"><b><i><br /></i></b></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: times; font-size: medium;"><b><i>"The World Jesus Knew: A Curious Kid's Guide to Life in the First Century" <br /><span class="a-size-base" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #565959; line-height: 20px !important; text-align: left;">by </span><span class="a-size-base" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #565959; line-height: 20px !important; text-align: left;">Marc Olson</span><span class="a-size-base" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #565959; line-height: 20px !important; text-align: left;"> and </span><span class="a-size-base" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #565959; line-height: 20px !important; text-align: left;">Jemima Maybank</span></i></b></span></div><span face=""Amazon Ember", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; color: #0f1111; font-family: times; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div><span face=""Amazon Ember", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; color: #0f1111; font-family: times; font-size: medium;">Maps! Along with that, it's time to think about the annual Sunday school Christmas Pageant. Our pageant will be virtual again this year since we have not yet resumed in-person Sunday school for all ages (Planning for January 9!) </span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-30bGCSNstJRjYOpB17RXGB3zDJ015LvVQ3-Vo0KdXHO5prQ7TArfaWJHwhqfOh6stlLI-TQopq7w8YF4mvI2tzPgpPOE7PD3lYSHKEERWEQuJL_ph2gCamOrnr2tIDaacHY-fy0FUWUp/s960/48359822_2967178239963885_828029317681250304_n.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="960" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-30bGCSNstJRjYOpB17RXGB3zDJ015LvVQ3-Vo0KdXHO5prQ7TArfaWJHwhqfOh6stlLI-TQopq7w8YF4mvI2tzPgpPOE7PD3lYSHKEERWEQuJL_ph2gCamOrnr2tIDaacHY-fy0FUWUp/s320/48359822_2967178239963885_828029317681250304_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><span style="font-size: medium;">I will be putting together a video to be posted online. This year's theme will be <i>"We All Can Tell The Story."</i> Please check out the options below for children and youth to participate. I hope to make this as easy as possible for us all!</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /><b>In-person recording:</b> Click on the signup genius link and schedule a time to come to the church and work with Jenny. We will have costumes, scriptures, and readings, and scenes ready to be acted out. If you play an instrument and would like to contribute music we can do that, too! We will take safety precautions, wear masks, and social distance as needed. Families with multi-kids and youth can sign up for just one slot.<br />click here - <a href="https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0A4BA9AD2CA2FF2-sixth" target="_blank">Pageant Sign Up</a><br /><b><br />Submissions:</b> Record something at home and send it to me! I can provide you with scriptures/readings, or just tell us the nativity story in your own words. Also greetings of "Meert Christmas" or "Peace on Earth" would be lovey. <br />Artwork and musical submissions are great too! Another idea is to ask interview questions about the nativity story such as "What is your favorite part of the story."</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div><b>A Song! Like to sing? </b>Below are the words and the music to the traditional Christmas Hymn "Christ is Born This Evening." Costumes are not necessary but feel free to create your own costumes or borrow costumes from the church. We can arrange a time for costume pick up or drop off. Email recording to me - or if the files are too big for an email, please upload it to Google Drive or Dropbox and send me a link. devotionals to send out for families to use at home. As I look through all the
possibilities, I am getting overwhelmed and think that perhaps the best thing
we can do for ourselves this year is to keep things simple. </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt; mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">We are zoomed out. We are frustrated with
having to print this document, download that, and log in there.</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt; mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">As we approach Advent this year, I am
personally drawn into the idea of slowing things down and participating in the
waiting. I am going to revisit the book called “Learning to Walk in the Dark”
by Barbara Brown Taylor and embrace the darkness. </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt; mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt; mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">There are also two phrases I have been thinking about recently
that I will try to use as a guide during this Advent season, and maybe they
will be meaningful for your family as well. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">Take your time. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoListParagraphCxSpLast"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">What works?<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">Both sentences come from my friend and former first-grade teacher, Mr. Nyswaner.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>“Take your
time!” was his mantra to the class as we were practicing reading and writing. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I hear him say that often in my head when realizing
I have been making silly mistakes and forgetting things because I am in a hurry
to get something done. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>(Side note: I also
remember that he would promise us that if we were good listeners and were
taking our time with our work, he would reward us by doing a headstand on
Fridays.) <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Over the years I have called
Mr. Nyswaner for guidance on working with kids and parents.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In one extremely helpful conversation about
managing disruptive behavior, he told me to stop asking parents what they “do”
at home and start asking parents what “works” at home. Always focus on what
works, he said. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></p><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">This year I am sending out a choose your own adventure-themed Advent calendar. The idea is to light a candle together with your family
on the Sundays in Advent and then chose from a list of suggested ideas throughout
the week or create your own. Or not! The idea is to take your time this advent
season and focus and embrace what is working. What is bringing your family joy
and comfort? When you identify those things focus on them – and do more of
that! <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">For those of you that may want to lean into Advent a
little more, I am also sending a weekly Advent devotional and coloring sheets
(for kids and grownups!) created by Illustrated Ministry. Due to copyright restrictions, they are now available for us to post and download. If you haven't received an Advent calendar or devotional in the mail please let me know if you
would like one or additional copies of the coloring sheets or the devotional to share. Anxiety. Anger. Yup, these are three words that we are all quite familiar with these days. It kind of makes me chuckle a little bit when I read the words of this scripture passage from Philippians. Paul, writing to the Philippians and he tells them not to worry. </p><p>Don't worry about it. </p><p>Geesh. Okay, Paul. Easy for you to say. Almost impossible.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEgCQYrhhV6ujUd1kjk879fmCK-Mi7GFyofHmn6PpUMJeIYdt_p0ZZmqmw-HW3Rl1eMsMXRDuyx02x0hiz63W3J32odPTsp8Qq_3pCdl9AyWRp-SAOHeWAg2Cd-_PIEs_1jZAy7bYVNUPU/s267/Paul+.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="267" data-original-width="188" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEgCQYrhhV6ujUd1kjk879fmCK-Mi7GFyofHmn6PpUMJeIYdt_p0ZZmqmw-HW3Rl1eMsMXRDuyx02x0hiz63W3J32odPTsp8Qq_3pCdl9AyWRp-SAOHeWAg2Cd-_PIEs_1jZAy7bYVNUPU/s0/Paul+.jpg" /></a></div><p>But upon reflection, I am guessing it wasn't an easy thing for him to say. At this point in Paul's life, he's writing to the community in Philippi from somewhere in prison. He's pretty sure he's not going to see any of these people that he loves and ministers to again. All he's got to keep him going are the letters that he is sending an receiving. Yet, he is still faithful. He still loves and trusts God. He wants the people to know that his encouragement not to worry is rooted in the promise that the God who loves us is near and is listening. Paul wants them to know that they can feel joyful and be peaceful when they have trusting communication with God. </p><p> Read <a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Philippians+4%3A1-9&version=NRSV" target="_blank">Philippians 4: 1-9 </a></p><p>So, this passage starts out with "Therefore, my brothers and sisters whom I love and miss." It starts with "therefore" because this is his final chapter in this letter. He's wrapping things up. If you want to read back a few verses (Phil. 3: 20-21) you will find that he is telling the community that their "Citizenship is heaven." He says Jesus will come from there and transform us to be a part of this kingdom. So, therefore... and we move on to his advice. </p><p>First, he mentions Euodia and Syntyche and urges them to settle their disagreement. We know that they are two female leaders in the early church, but we don't know what it is that they are at odds about. Given the speed of letters and how news traveled back then it must have been pretty interesting for Paul to learn about it in prison and then respond to it in his letter. All we can guess is that this conflict was causing worry for the church in Phillipi so he calls it out. Paul acknowledges that conflict and stress are a real problem. </p><p>We all know about that, am I right? Paul says that conflict, anger, and worry are all obstacles to peace. Read verses 4 - 9 again of this scripture and think about these questions: </p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>What or who does Paul believe peace and joy are rooted in?</li><li>How does Paul say we can cultivate peace and joy?</li><li> What thoughts or practices can we cultivate today for greater peace and joy?</li></ul><p></p><p>One spiritual practice that we can work on is prayer. Here are some things to watch. Totally different types of prayer are depicted in the movies "Joe Vs. The Volcano" and "The Apostle." In the first clip, Joe is lost at sea when he watches the moon rise and utters a prayer of thanks. In the second video “Sonny” prays an honest and very angry prayer for peace.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/H1EOnVSSJYs" width="320" youtube-src-id="H1EOnVSSJYs"></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/q5v5DOEF45E" width="320" youtube-src-id="q5v5DOEF45E"></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p>Stuff to think about: </p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li> What do you think about Joe’s prayer in Joe vs. the Volcano?</li><li>What do you think about Sonny’s prayer in The Apostle?</li><li> What kinds of prayers lead to peace and joy?</li><li>How do you talk to God? </li></ul><p></p><p><b>Labyrinth</b>: Here is another spiritual practice that you might want to try. Tracing or walking a Labyrinth can help us relax and seek peace and joy. Try this one below. Follow along with your finger or your eyes and reflect on the prompts provided at the designated points. </p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh__A1ecSvcqgFcUm0AftL9NLZ4GXDNY-F09WATkUVRPIr5vL4JNkaTTl1tD0Rc8FZi5DQlmd_WfDOIBgpXo7RvJ-lx-OrgSyfigsDCo9hyTJoSbxQKOuLfzjs91_VvNRIe8dYujoAVXohy/s2048/Labrynth.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1583" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh__A1ecSvcqgFcUm0AftL9NLZ4GXDNY-F09WATkUVRPIr5vL4JNkaTTl1tD0Rc8FZi5DQlmd_WfDOIBgpXo7RvJ-lx-OrgSyfigsDCo9hyTJoSbxQKOuLfzjs91_VvNRIe8dYujoAVXohy/s320/Labrynth.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sUz6tk80x7rwxZkZEV1DeasbMUOv_Twi/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank">Download Labyrinth Here</a> </p><p><br /></p>Jenny Ruthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02196748414740437931noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6890466100044337430.post-25918888828620962932020-10-02T08:56:00.006-04:002021-01-21T13:26:56.862-05:00Reflections for Youth - Stewardship, Vineyards, and Jesus - Oh My! <p>This week's scripture from the Gospel of Matthew is a hum-dinger. Jesus tells a story that is violent and very much in-your-face. There are a lot of questions here to think about. And of course, there is no one correct answer. For me, this is the most interesting and challenging thing about reading the Bible. You get to read it and decide what it means for yourself and your life. So, in this reflection, I am just going to compile some thoughts and questions to get us started in thinking about this passage. </p><p><a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+21%3A33-46++&version=NRSV" target="_blank">Read Matthew 21: 33-46</a></p><p>Here's the 30-second version:</p><p>Jesus' authority is being questioned by the religious leaders and this is the second of two stories that he tells them. A farmer planted a vineyard and builds a fence around it and a tall tower in order to watch over it. He rented the vineyard to some farmworkers and goes away on a trip. When it was time to pick the grapes, the farmer sent some of his servants to the vineyard to get his share of the grapes. But the farmworkers beat the servants and even killed some of them. The farmer decided to send a larger number of more servants to go get the grapes that belonged to him. The farmworkers beat and killed them, too. He decided to send his son, thinking that maybe the farmworkers didn't respect the servants. Maybe it would be different for his son. Nope. No dice. Before the son arrives the farmworkers in the tower see him coming. They said, “Here comes the farmer’s son. If we kill him, the farmer won’t send anyone else for the grapes and this vineyard will be ours.” <br />So, that happened. <br /><br /></p><p>Jesus ends the story in conversation with the religious leaders. They say “The farmer will get rid of those cruel, greedy farmworkers and get new honest, kind workers.” Jesus replies by quoting some scripture and saying yes. “God’s kingdom will be taken away from you and given to a different people,” he says. The scripture says then the religious leaders knew that Jesus was talking about them. (Sorry, maybe that was longer than 20-seconds?)</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOfSzioXjwOMhWOi7_T_qRqcVOD-LFdEf49L5BMjxcfeps3NvK1I7vOIHUTtmMfhAuhNRC73XjC87aCGMfzUaC0AxiFkkysE2ziZv74O8MW6Sfbm4Ybv8Vv3lMrGmIdpNrv-wbiCiDKfIR/s230/workers.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="159" data-original-width="230" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOfSzioXjwOMhWOi7_T_qRqcVOD-LFdEf49L5BMjxcfeps3NvK1I7vOIHUTtmMfhAuhNRC73XjC87aCGMfzUaC0AxiFkkysE2ziZv74O8MW6Sfbm4Ybv8Vv3lMrGmIdpNrv-wbiCiDKfIR/s0/workers.jpg" /></a></div><p>Soooo, let's jump in. This time of year at the church we talk about Stewardship. Our steward campaign is when we talk about taking care of the church and ask for our members to make their giving pledges for the following church year. To steward - as a verb - means to look after or take care of something or someone. Like the farmworkers are asked to take care of the Vineyard. </p><p>Thinking about this story can help us consider how we are practicing faithful stewardship of the places where we live but of our relationships as well. As we grow, learn, and move through the world we gain a sense of concern for the wider world - the word beyond just our neighborhoods. We are moved to take action and care for people and the earth. As we get older this becomes a greater responsibility as we see that people's decisions and choices have consequences. This parable or allegory that Jesus tells here in Matthew helps us to think about what responsible stewardship is and what God is calling us to do about it. </p><p>What are the "vineyards" in our lives and the world that God has placed in our care?</p><p>In this scripture passage remember that the religious leaders have been continually questioning Jesus' authority and Jesus responds with parables and stories. In this case, it seems to be more of an allegory. We learn from our English and literature teachers that an allegory is used as a popular form of writing (or storytelling here in Jesus' case) in which a story points to a hidden or symbolic parallel meaning. For example, certain elements in the story such as people, things, or events point to corresponding elements in another realm or level of meaning. </p><p>If you are ready to dive into sorting our the allegory that Jesus tells here, here are some things to think about: Jesus in this story seems to be referencing Isaiah 5:1–7.<a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Isaiah+5%3A+1-7&version=NRSV" target="_blank"> Read it here.</a> </p><p>What similarities are there between Jesus’ parable and Isaiah 5?<br /> Based on Isaiah 5, who might the landowner represent in Jesus’ story?<br /></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Why do you imagine the landowner leaves?</li><li>What might the vineyard symbolize in Jesus’ story?</li></ul><p></p><p>In this parable the landowner lets others care for his vineyard. <br /></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>What might Jesus be saying about God?</li><li> Who might the tenants symbolize?</li></ul><p></p><p>The landowner sends slaves to collect the harvest. <br /></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>What do you imagine the landowner wants the harvest for?</li><li>Who might the slaves symbolize?</li></ul><p></p><p>The landowner finally sends his son. <br /></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>What happens to the son?</li><li> Who might the son symbolize?</li><li>What might be some meanings of the whole parable?</li></ul><p></p><p>One interpretation of this parable views God as the landowner, the vineyard as God’s people, the tenants as the religious leaders, the slaves as God’s prophets, and the son as Jesus. Using this interpretation here are some more questions: <br /></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>What might Jesus be saying about himself? About the religious leaders?</li><li>To whom does Jesus say the kingdom of God will be given? (See v. 43.)</li><li> What does it mean to produce the “fruits of the kingdom”?</li></ul><p></p><p><i>Some final thoughts:</i></p><p> God gives the tenants great responsibility.<br /></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Why do you think God gives people responsibility?</li><li>What “vineyards” has God given you? What or who are you called to care for?</li><li>How can we be faithful stewards today of God’s creation? Of God’s people?</li></ul><p></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Jenny Ruthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02196748414740437931noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6890466100044337430.post-81765922231651916392020-09-23T10:08:00.001-04:002021-01-21T13:27:16.286-05:00Reflections for Youth - Words and Actions (Matthew 21:23-32)<p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: georgia;">For this week's reflections let's jump back into the Gospel of Matthew. Jesus tells another parable - big surprise - right? That Jesus - always trying to teach us something. </span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: georgia;"><a href=" https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+21%3A23-32&version=NRSV" target="_blank">Read Matthew 21: 23-32</a></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: georgia;">At the beginning of this scripture passage, those pesky Pharisees are back. Jesus is in Jerusalem and teaching at the temple. The Pharisees, the Jewish leaders, have come to hear Jesus teach as well. </span><span style="font-family: georgia;"> They
asked him why they should trust what Jesus says to them and what he teaches the
people. They are questioning his authority. Again. </span></p><p></p><p>
</p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: georgia;">Jesus
doesn’t answer their question – and has a few questions for them before he tells them a story<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>about a farmer who had two children.</span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: georgia;">The farmer tells both sons, "Go work in the field." One
says, "Of course. I will do so right away" but then does not do any
work.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBHWHsU4joxrXmymppqkkTHs-CI-ik8YBhfhcbLj2P7oDPeZnSrbu6SyoYfWPZyZopx8k44AnQZFMz0h_3d4LLb1atxz1fxeOT_BG9WpwUt3pEBrt0GR6wZBGiRH3adhaeQAODYU_lJldh/s245/2+sons.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="157" data-original-width="245" height="185" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBHWHsU4joxrXmymppqkkTHs-CI-ik8YBhfhcbLj2P7oDPeZnSrbu6SyoYfWPZyZopx8k44AnQZFMz0h_3d4LLb1atxz1fxeOT_BG9WpwUt3pEBrt0GR6wZBGiRH3adhaeQAODYU_lJldh/w289-h185/2+sons.jpg" width="289" /></a></div><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: georgia;">The other
son says, "I will not go work in the field" but then changes his
mind and actually does go<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>and works in
the field.<o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: georgia;">Both of the
sons say one thing but do the other thing. </span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: georgia;">So what's Jesus up to by telling this story to the Pharisees?</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: georgia;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I’ve been thinking that Jesus is a person that
does what he says he is going to do, so maybe he tells this story to let the
Pharisees know that they can trust what he teaches because he is a person who
practices what he preaches. <o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: georgia;">Maybe he
also tells the story to let the Pharisees know that they need to do more than
just talk, that their actions are just, if not more, important than their
words.<o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: georgia;">We learn in
the Bible that not only does Jesus use words to teach about God, but his
actions teach about God, too, because his actions match his words.<o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: georgia;">Jesus is the
person who says, "I will go out and do work in the field" and then
goes and works in the field. </span></span><span style="font-family: georgia;">In fact, a
lot of times, Jesus’ actions help make his words make more sense.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: georgia;">Things to think about: </span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: georgia;">Do your actions reflect the kind of person you are? <br />Who can you think of that is a person that exemplifies what Jesus is trying to teach?<br />Who can you think of that doesn't? </span></p>

Here we have our old friend Paul is writing a letter from prison (somewhere, he doesn't say exactly where) to the folks in Phillipi which is a Roman colony. Paul previously established a church community there (you can find out about that in Acts 16). </span></p><p><span style="font-family: georgia;">No doubt Paul - being locked-up - has lots of time to contemplate things and is writing about what it means to " live in Christ." </span></p><p><span style="font-family: georgia;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: georgia;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2q_KzLQp1VXbbMTQUQY4L55_cG_4f9of65J1TPavdio2Or18YEG3CYX3Ge7_T7l8t5C6XBUsuMcV3Exkrj6cimDgGS6h7FiJZFJEb2LIusrBdJtp0BDtqenhJI7gBTIcuX8_BYgcxhw8R/" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="286" data-original-width="360" height="159" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2q_KzLQp1VXbbMTQUQY4L55_cG_4f9of65J1TPavdio2Or18YEG3CYX3Ge7_T7l8t5C6XBUsuMcV3Exkrj6cimDgGS6h7FiJZFJEb2LIusrBdJtp0BDtqenhJI7gBTIcuX8_BYgcxhw8R/w200-h159/image.png" width="200" /></a></span></div><p></p><p><span style="font-family: georgia;">Give the passage a read here: </span></p><p><a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Philippians+1%3A21-30&version=NRSV" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;">Philippians 1: 21-30</span></a></p><p><span style="font-family: georgia;">Paul is encouraging the community to "<span style="background-color: white; font-size: 16px;"> </span><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 16px;">live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ." </span></span></p><p><span style="font-family: georgia;">So, how do we find hope and meaning in life? </span></p><p><span style="font-family: georgia;">What if it all begins when we are able to look beyond ourselves and our circumstances. Paul is in prison yet he writes letters to encourage and teach those in communities that follow Jesus. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: georgia;">How do we find hope when we feel locked up? Maybe one of the ways that we can "live in Christ" is to reach out and encourage others - just like Paul did. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: georgia;">Paul promises that we will experience abundant life when we strive to believe God's promises and trust God - even when times are hard. God’s love shines into our lives through Jesus Christ. Living lives "in Christ" means to reflect God’s love into the world. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: georgia;">Things to think about:</span></p><p><span style="font-family: georgia;">What are some ways your life can reflect God’s love, with friends, at home, during school?<br />Who are the people that you look to for encouragement? <br />Can you think of someone that you can encourage and support during challenging times? </span></p><p><span style="font-family: georgia;"> </span></p><p><span style="font-family: georgia;"> </span></p>Jenny Ruthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02196748414740437931noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6890466100044337430.post-38673385524639399292020-09-10T15:11:00.000-04:002021-01-21T13:28:42.813-05:00Book Suggestions for September 2020 <p><span style="font-size: large;"> <span style="font-family: georgia;">Hello Friends!
